The 3rd round of the WSK Super Master Series has been a great challenge for our drivers, on a totally renewed circuit of Sarno, in the south of Italy.

The FA Alonso Kart squad delivered a solid race in the OK Senior final, with spectacular action on track after a chaotic start; our drivers have been close for the entire race, fighting back to the top with an amazing progression!

Malek was our best placed driver as the checkered flag waved; P6 for him, confirming his solid growth over the course of these first races of the season! Tsolov followed in P7, again with a solid performance, despite getting involved in a contact in the beginning of the race.

Next we had Modonese in P8 (who scored a sensational P2 in qualifying on Friday), Fittipaldi P9, Pasiewicz P11, Leistra P14 and Del Pino P21.

Positive weekend for Burgoyne in OKJ, who gained 10 places during the final and finished in P23, while his teammates Kastelic and Fluxa both were unlucky during the intermediate stages of the competition, just like Hoogendoorn and Gaspar (60 Mini).

The Team is now focusing on the next race in Lonato!

Lively and hard fought finals in Sarno at the third round of the WSK Super Master Series. Kremers won KZ2, Antonelli dominated OK, Kutskov to the fore in OKJ and Olivieri claimed his maiden win in MINI. The fourth and closing race on April 25th in Lonato.

The third round of WSK Super Master Series has been successful both in terms of participation and spectacle. The race was housed by the new 1550 meters long International Circuit Napoli in Sarno (Salerno, ITA) with 271 drivers on track from 47 nations out of the entered 300.

Kremers takes the win in KZ2, Valtanen the lead of the championship

Several twists enlivened KZ2 where, eventually, the Dutch Marijn Kremers (BirelART Racing/BirelART-TM Racing) took the win in an exciting finale after winning Prefinal/B. He led the KR Motorsport pairing made by the Finn Juho Valtanen (KR-TM Racing), who won Prefinal/A, and the Italian Danilo Albanese (KR-Iame).

The other Italian Giuseppe Palomba (BirelART Racing/BirelART-TM Racing) was fourth and the Finn Simo Puhakka (Tony Kart Racing Team/Tony Kart-Vortex) fifth.

The Italian Francesco Celenta (Parolin Motorsport/Parolin-TM Racing) and the French Adrien Renaudin (Sodikart/Sodikart-TM Racing) did not finish due to an incident, while other protagonists like the classification leader from Sweden Viktor Gustavsson (Leclerc by Lennox/BirelART-TM Racing) and the Italian Alex Irlando (CRG Racing Team/CRG-TM Racing) were out of the games already in the Prefinal.

Final KZ2: 1. Kremers; 2. Valtanen; 3. Albanese; 4. Palomba; 5. Puhakka; 6. Longhi; 7. Ippolito; 8. Marseglia; 9. Hiltbrand; 10. Iglesias.

KZ2 classification: 1. Valtanen points 174; 2. Kremers 131; 3. Gustavsson 101; 4. Albanese 100; 5. Puhakka 93.

Antonelli back to the victory in OK. Camara keeps the lead

Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) was back to the victory in a WSK event after winning last year the WSK Euro Series.

The Italian driver has been perfect both in Prefinal-A and in the Final, dominating the two races from lights to flag, while his teammate from Brazil Rafael Camara won Prefinal-B, but then was relegated from P2 to P4 by a 3s time penalty in the Final, a result that allowed him to retain the classification lead. The other two podium positions went therefore to the Finn Tuukka Taponen (Tony Kart Racing Team/Tony Kart-Vortex) and the Russian Artem Severiukhin (Ward Racing/Tony Kart-Vortex). The Czech driver Igor Cepil (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) was fifth instead.

Final OK: 1. Antonelli; 2. Taponen; 3. Severiukhin; 4. Camara; 5. Cepil; 6. Malek; 7. Tsolov; 8. Modenese; 9. Fittipaldi; 10. Turney.

OK classification: 1. Camara points 255; 2. Antonelli 196; 3. Taponen 157; 4. Lindblad 145; 5. Severiukhin 123.

Russian drivers leads in new Sarno’s track; Kutskov wins from Popov. Powell leads the championship

Russian drivers have been shining in OK-Junior after the Japanese Kean Nakamura Berta (Forza Racing/Exprit-TM Racing) and the French Enzo Deligny (Parolin Motorsport/Parolin-TM Racing) had the upper hand in the two Prefinals. The Russian Kirill Kutskov (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) and his fellow-countryman Maksimilian Popov (Ward Racing/Tony Kart-Vortex) bounced back in the Final dominating it.

The third place went to Singapore’s Akshay Bohra (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) who led the Belgian teammate Douwe Dedecker. Dedecker ended fifth winning the sprint to the line with the other KR Motorsport, the Jamaican Alex Powell, who confirmed his classification lead.

Final OKJ: 1. Kutskov; 2. Popov; 3. Bohra; 4. Dedecker; 5. Deligny; 6. Powell; 7. Slater; 8. Krapin; 9. Keeble; 10. Sammalisto.

OKJ classification: 1. Powell points 180; 2. Bohra 160; 3. Kutskov 123; 4. Popov 122; 5. Slater 101.

Maiden win for Olivieri in MINI. The championship still in Costoya’s hands.

The MINI Final has been uncertain and hard fought. This time the victory went to the young Italian Emanuele Olivieri (Formula K Serafini/IPK-TM Racing), who claimed his maiden win in a WSK event. Olivieri pipped the Czech Jindrich Pesl (Baby Race/Parolin-Iame) and the Brit Lewis Wherrell (Team Driver/KR-Iame) in the brand-new Sarno layout.

The Dutch René Lammers (Baby Race/Parolin-Iame) was among the quickest and slipped down to P4 in the closing stages, while the French Jimmy Helias (Tony Kart Racing Team/Tony Kart-Vortex) was fifth.

The classification is still sub-judice due to the appeal to the decision to exclude Helias from qualifying early into the weekend. The Spanish classification leader Christian Costoya (Parolin Motorsport/Parolin-TM Racing) was eighth after winning Prefinal-A and leading the central part of the Final.

Final MINI (sub-judice): 1. Olivieri; 2. Pesl; 3. Wherrell; 4. Lammers; 5. Helias; 6. Orjuela; 7. Ivannikov; 8. Costoya; 9. Slater; 10. Tarnvanichkul.

MINI classification (sub-judice): 1. Costoya points 195; 2. Lammers 192; 3. Olivieri 146; 4. Orjuela 124; 5. Skulanov 120.

The third round of the WSK Super Master Series is ready to start at the new International Circuit Napoli for categories MINI, OKJ, OK and KZ2.

The positive trend of WSK events continues with record figures also at the third round of the WSK Super Master Series that will get underway at the International Circuit Napoli in Sarno (Salerno, ITA) on March 25-28th. This participation result has never been reached by an International Series in the four entitled categories MINI, OKJ, OK and KZ2. The race on the new track of Sarno follows the success scored by the opener in Adria and that of the second round in La Conca.

Gustafsson leads KZ2

KZ2 will resume with the classification led by the Swede Viktor Gustafsson (Leclerc by Lennox/BirelART-TM Racing), who won in Adria and totaled 89 points so far. He is followed by the Finn Juho Valtanen (KR Motorsport/KR-TM Racing) at 68 and the Italians Danilo Albanese (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) at 41 and Francesco Celenta (Parolin Motorsport/Parolin-TM Racing) at 35. The French Adrien Renaudin (Sodikart/Sodikart-TM Racing) is one point short at 34.

Camara leads OK, but Lindblad is closing in

In OK, after the first two rounds held in Adria and La Conca, the classification lead is held by the Brazilian Rafael Camara (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) at 164 points, but his teammate from Britain Arvid Lindblad is closing in at 136 points, thanks to the victory in the round in La Conca. The third position is currently occupied by the Pole Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (BirelART Racing/RK-TM Racing) at 77 points. He is followed by Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) at 64 and the Finn Tuukka Taponen (Tony Kart Racing Team/Tony Kart-Vortex) at 60.

Powell leads Al Dhaheri in OKJ

In OK-Junior the Jamaican Alex Powell (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) made a big leap forward in the classification thanks to the victory he claimed in La Conca, while the classification of the United Arab Emirates’ driver Rashid Al Dhaheri (Parolin Motorsport/Parolin-TM Racing) suffered a heavy blow due to the retirement in the Prefinal of La Conca after the victory in Adria. Powell took therefore the lead of the standings at 108 points, Al Dhaheri follows him at 94 and the Asian Akshay Bohra (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) is third at 91. The latter proceeds his teammate from Brazil Matheus Ferreira, who stands at 81 and the German Maxim Rehm (Ricky Flynn/Kosmic-Vortex) at 75.

Costoya is the new leader of MINI

The challenge is tight also in MINI that has a lot of strong title contenders. The lead of the standings is currently held by the Spanish driver Christian Costoya (Parolin Motorsport/Parolin/TM Racing) who totaled 127 points thanks to the win in La Conca from his teammate from Colombia Matias Orjuela, who was pipped at the flag by 0.009s. The winner in Adria from Holland René Lammers (Baby Race/Parolin-Iame) is second at 119 points and the Russian Gerasim Skulanov (CRG Racing Team/CRG-TM Racing) third at 114. The Pole Jan Przyrowsky (AV Racing/Parolin-TM Racing) is fourth at 107 points, Orjuela fifth at 88.

The second WSK Super Master Series at La Conca saw a resurfaced track that provided a large amount of grip. The impressive chicane saw some racers catch some air even, and provided very intense racing.

Even though the KZ-2 class didn’t race this weekend, more than 170 drivers from 44 different nations took on the Italian track. The missing class will be back for the next race in Sarno, the 28th of March, and will be at Lonato as well for the final round of the Championship.

Lindblad wins the race, but doesn’t lead the Champioship.

British driver Arvid Lindblad set the fastest time on Saturday, so his win was a safe bet. Come the final, there was several drivers on the lead, initially being Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) who started in front of the grid. Classification leader and teammate Rafael Camara (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) overtook Antonelli for the lead, but he wouldn’t be in first place until the end. KR Motorsport driver Arvid Lindblad overtook Camara and kept his lead until the checkered flag. Camara finished in second, what was a relief for his Championship campaign. Now, the Brazilian is still on the lead with 164 points, followed by race winner Lindblad with 136. Third position went to Tymotheus Kucharczyk (BirelART Racing/RK-TM Racing) and Joseph Turney (Tony Kart Racing/Tony Kart-Vortex) was right at the gates of a podium in P4. Once pole sitter Antonelli finished in fifth. The top 10 were completed by Spina, Taponen, Malek, Zhivnov and Bertuca.

Powell wins in OKJ and snatches the lead.

Jamaican Alex Powell (KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) imposed himself on the final and lead all laps, proving that P2 in the first race on Saturday was the exception. Singapore’s Akshay Bohra, who was the fastest on Saturday, had to settle for second, but he can leave La Conca knowing he’s just three points behind second on the Championship Al Dhaheri, who didn’t make it to the end after an incident on Prefinal A.

Brazilian Matheus Ferreira finished on the last step of the podium for KR Motorsport, followed by Russian Tigran Bunatyan (Team Komarov/Tony Kart-TM Racing) and compatriot Miguel Costa (Sauber/KR-Iame) in P5. The rest of the top 10 were Dedecker, Gubenko, Eyckmans, Deligny and Popov.

Costoya wins in MINI for the lead.

A lot of lead changes in the smallest class brought a dramatic end to the weekend, where Christian Costoya (Parolin Motorsport/Parolin-TM Racing) snatched the race win from teammate Matias Orjuela by just 0.009s after a hard-fought battle on track. The Spaniard is now leading the Championship ahead of Rene Lammers (Baby Race/Parolin-Iame), who couldn’t replicate his results at Adria and finished in fifth. Ahead of Lammers, Russian Gerasim Skulanov (CRG Racing Team/CRG-TM Racing) finished 3rd, followed by his compatriot Vladimir Ivannikov (Drago Corse/Parolin-TM Racing). The top 10 was completed by Sauber, Olivieri, Przyrowsky, Tarnvanichkul and Schaufler.

The following rounds of the WSK Super Master Series are:

Round 3 – SARNO 28-03-21 – MINI-OKJ-OK-KZ2

Round 4 – LONATO 25-04-21 – MINI-OKJ-OK-KZ2

The IAME Winter Cup started off the 2021 international IAME season in great fashion on the Kartodromo Internacional Lucas Guerrero of Valencia. British drivers made the most of a tricky weather in Sunday’s Finals with Roman Kamyab claiming the victory in Mini, Bart Harrison winning his second consecutive cup in Junior, and Dean McDonald achieving another Senior success.

The fifth edition of the IAME Winter Cup, organized by RGMMC, gathered once again the best IAME teams and drivers in Mini, Junior, and Senior classes on the Kartodromo Valencia. While the Spanish track remained dry on Friday and Saturday, rain came spicing up Sunday’s Prefinals and Finals, bringing the best out of the competitors in each field. Some of them were able to make a difference in the most crucial moments, like Roman Kamyab achieving his first international success in Mini, Bart Harrison winning the Junior class for the second season in a row, and Dean MacDonald leading the Senior Final from lights to flag!

Senior

Daniel Nogales (Kart Republic Spain) set the fastest time of the Senior class, the most crowded field with up to 60 entrants. Sam Balota (Dan Holland Racing) was second-best ahead of Dean MacDonald (Strawberry Racing). The GT car driver started his weekend on the right foot with a first heat win on the same day, followed by a second place and two more victories, which gave him the provisional lead on Saturday evening. Sunday morning’s Prefinal went to Kimber ahead MacDonald and Clayton Ravenscroft (KR Sport), pulling off a 13-place recovery!

Second overall last season, MacDonald turned into domination mode for this year’s Final! Thanks to his better start, the Brit rapidly built a gap and led the 20-lap race from lights to flag, emulating his win of 2019. As the leader could not be caught again, Kimber had to make do with second place ahead of Westover.

Junior

William Macintyre (KR Sport) emerged quickest in Friday’s Qualifying ahead of Louis Leveau (Monlau Competicion), followed by Ivan Arias Chavarri (AC Motorsport) and Adria Mustienes Gil (Kidstowin). Macintyre kept the lead after the heats with two wins. Kanato Le (Fusion Motorsport) came to the fore in second position in front of Arias Chavarri, winner of the penultimate heat on Saturday. In Sunday’s Prefinal, Le made good use of the drying conditions and passed Macintyre for victory, with Robinson diving through for second place.

In Sunday’s Final, Robinson started well at lights out before Le took the lead back in the opening lap. While the Brit quickly built himself a one-second gap, Harrison was equally fast in fighting his way through the pack. From the third row of the grid, he climbed to second and launched a successful move on Le close to half-race. Once in the lead, Harrison kept all doors shut, which allowed a recovering Marcus Luzio (KR Sport), 10th on the grid, to close in on Le. In the last lap, the latter went off the track, let Luzio through for second, but was able to keep the third spot. Unaware of the drama behind him, Harrison could savour his second Winter Cup win in a row. Le was eventually classified as runner-up following a penalty for Luzio, with Macintyre completing the podium.

Mini

The Qualifying session of the Mini category saw the local drivers top the timesheet with Sandro Perez Sanchez (MDC Racing) on pole, followed by Raul Zunzarren Perez (Monlau Competicion) and Alejandro Martinez (Praga Racing). The eliminatory races led to a close fight between Perez Sanchez and Zunzarren Perez. While each driver won twice, the former claimed the first place, followed by a single point by Zunzarren Perez, with Martinez and Roman Kamyab (Privateer) third and fourth. In Sunday’s Prefinal, the leading order was turned upside down with Zunzarren Perez retiring after some troublesome opening laps, Martinez being disqualified and Perez Sanchez going from first to fourth against Sacha Van’t Pad Bosch (Fusion), Kamyab, and Luuk Taal (Fusion Motorsport).

The Minis were the first out on track for their final race on Sunday afternoon. While Van’t Pad Bosch kept his advantage at the start, Taal went past Kamyab for second place but the Brit quickly made his way up to first and kept the whole 15-lap race under control! Despite his efforts, Van’t Pad Bosch had to make do with second place with Taal completing the top 3.

IAME Winter Cup Awards

The three class winners Roman Kamyab, Bart Harrison, and Dean MacDonald were awarded the full IAME Euro Series entry, as well as the driver pack, while the drivers in second place were awarded entry and driver pack for 2 IAME Euro Series races, and the 3rd place one race each.

Among the objectives, recovering the postponed races considering also the chance of two events per weekend and sanitary safety through a protocol to allow  the restart of WSK Championships.

Waiting for the restart of competitions, WSK Promotion is working to recover the season that has been compromised by the lasting lockdown following the Covid-19 emergency that has stopped working activities and sporting events.

Among the initiatives of WSK Promotion, a calendar featuring some double events in a “long” weekend at some appointments is being investigated. This would allow a recovery of the rounds postponed at the beginning of season 2020.

The objective targeted by WSK Promotion is to get back on track as soon as possible without compromising the sanitary safety of all participants, teams, drivers and staff. Recently, WSK Promotion has been discussing with the Federation to devise a protocol allowing the restart. The new calendar will be defined shortly to complete the WSK Super Master Series that was interrupted after the opening races in Adria and Lonato, and to run the WSK Euro Series, WSK Open Cup and WSK Final Cup.

The third place went to the Asian from Singapore Christian Ho (KR-Iame/Sauger Karting Team).

The WSK Champions Cup in Adria awarded the first titles of 2020 at the end of a hard-fought weekend with 170 drivers on track. The winner of OK was Taylor Barnard (KR-Iame-Bridgestone/Team Rosberg), that of OK-Junior Alfio Andrea Spina (KR-Iame-Vega/Team KR), and Mini’s Anatoly Khavalkin (Parolin-TM Racing-Vega/Team Parolin).

The opener of the WSK season offered an excellent spectacle with the WSK Champions Cup, the traditional event that awarded the first titles of 2020 at the Adria Karting Raceway in the 15th year of activity of WSK Promotion.

The 170 drivers on track came from 37 different countries to battle out the victory in the three entitled categories OK, OK-Junior and Mini.

Novelties and new lineups were present and some drivers switched to higher categories too. Interestingly, three sisters from the Czech Republic were present: Babickova Eliska and Tereza in OK, Perta in OKJ challenged several strong rivals.

WSK Champions Cup also had the duty to provide a first indication on the main protagonists of this new season and the first titles of 2020 were claimed in Adria by the Brit Taylor Barnard (KR-Iame-Bridgestone/Team Rosberg) in OK, the Italian Alfio Andrea Spina (KR-Iame-Vega/Team KR) in OK-Junior, and the Russian Anatoly Khavalkin (Parolin-TM Racing-Vega/Team Parolin) in Mini.

OK Prefinals in the morning had the first twist following a penalty handed to the Dutch Thomas Ten Brinke (Kosmic-Vortex-Bridgestone), who was the quickest after heats. Prefinal-A was therefore won by the Brazilian Rafa Camara (Exprit-TM Racing), while the Brit Taylor Barnard (KR-Iame) won Prefinal-B. Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR-Iame) could not take part in the final stages due to the fever and flu after being the quickest in qualifying and claiming the victory in the first qualifying heat.

The Final was eventually dominated by the British driver Taylor Barnard, who led the race throughout. The Spaniard Josep Marti Sobrepera (KR-Iame) managed to climb up to P2, but he was later on found under-weight and penalized. The second place was therefore inherited by the Russian Kirill Smal (Energy-TM Racing) and the third by the British driver Harry Thompson (KR-Iame), who lost a few positions. The Brazilian Matheus Morgatto (Parolin-TM Racing) managed to recover 21 places up to the final P5 behind the Russian Nikita Bedrin (Tony Kart-Vortex).

OK Final classification: 1. Barnard (GBR); 2. Smal (RUS); 3. Thompson (GBR).

In OK-Junior, the British driver Arvid Lindblad (KR-Iame-Vega) confirmed his speed and won Prefinal-A, followed by his teammate Alfio Andrea Spina, while the Norwegian Martinius Stenshorne (KR-Iame) won Prefinal-B leading the Brit Freddie Slater (Kosmic-Vortex). Final-B’s victory went to the Pole Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (RK-TM Racing).

The Final has been lively and hard-fought with several drivers aiming to the win. Eventually, Alfio Andrea Spina (KR-Iame-Vega) claimed his maiden win in OK-Junior. He had to face the challenge of the Norwegian Martinius Stenshorne and Singapore’s Christian Ho at the end of a good comeback race. The all KR-Iame podium welcomed several teams: KR Motorsport with Spina, Rosberg Racing Academy with Stenshorne and Sauber Karting Team with Ho. The fourth and fifth positions went to two protagonists of the weekend: the Russian Artem Severiukhim (Tony Kart-Vortex) that was fourth and the Brit Arvid Lindblad (KR-Iame) fifth, after holding P2 early on.

OK-Junior Final classification: 1. Spina (ITA); 2. Stenshorne (NOR), 3. Ho (SGP).

W Series’ Sarah Moore joins ROTAX Winter Cup livestream team

The forthcoming ROTAX Max Challenge Winter Cup, which takes place at Circuito Karting Campillos between the 21st and 23rd of February, will have a very special guest, who will be one of two new additions to the livestream team for the ROTAX Max Euro Trophy for the 2020 season.

W Series racer and Racing Pride ambassador Sarah Moore will be heading to the 1,580-metre CIK-FIA homologated circuit, acting as both racing analyst and pit lane reporter.

The Briton has secured championship glory during her lengthy career, which included karting, where she also raced in the ROTAX ranks, competing in the Stars of Tomorrow national championship in 2007 and 2008 in the Mini Max class. Moore also won the Ginetta Junior Championship in 2009 and the Britcar Endurance Championship GT4 endurance title with Matt Greenwood for Tockwith Motorsport, racing in the Ginetta G50 GT4.

“I’m pleased that Sarah will be alongside me at the forthcoming Winter Cup, which is looking to be a fantastic way to kick start the 2020 Euro Trophy season, that has over 250 competitors from almost 30 different nations who will head to southern Spain,” admitted Alex Goldschmidt, official Euro Trophy commentator, who is looking forward to working with Sarah in southern Spain.

“With a varied career over multiple disciplines, she will bring an interesting and exciting new dynamic to the event, which I am looking forward to finding out about in southern Spain.”

“It’s great to get back to the root of how my career started, when I jumped into karting at a young age, and it really helped me develop into the driver I am today,” admitted Moore, who is one of the 12 returning drivers for the second season of W Series, which gets underway at Russia’s Igora Drive circuit in late May and will conclude

Sarah is also a very active member within the LGBTQ+ community, which includes her ongoing work with Racing Pride, a UK-based initiative founded by Richard Morris and Christopher Sharp, that is spreading the word about further inclusivity with motorsport.

“To be asked to be a part of the Winter Cup and work in motorsport in a completely different aspect is an exciting challenge, and it is great to able to represent W Series and Racing Pride here, to help spread the word about how motorsport is changing, with many people knowing that we have to #RethinkRacing.”

Along with Sarah, Silverstone-based commentator and presenter Anthony Jordan will also be joining the Euro Trophy livestream, working alongside Alex Goldschmidt as the official pit lane reporter for all four rounds of the main campaign, which commences on April 10th, 2020, at Belgium’s legendary Karting Genk circuit, based in the Limburg region.

Having worked in the UK motorsport scene for the past few seasons in both two and four-wheel racing categories, the Briton will bring his own style to the ROTAX Max Euro Trophy broadcast platforms, which are provided by both promoter Camp Company GmbH and Downforce Radio, who becomes the dedicated audio stream partner for 2020.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the ROTAX Max Euro Trophy for 2020,” admitted Jordan, who is looking forward to a new step in his career, as it will be his first assignment in Europe..

“I can’t wait to be in the paddock, getting to know the drivers, teams and make new friends and memories. To be a part of this championship for the forthcoming season is definitely a step up, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Further developments for the forthcoming Winter Cup include an increase in the maximum amount of allocated grid slots for the Senior Max class, which has now been bolstered to 90 from the original 72 mandated, which will also mean that Qualifying Practice will get underway at 1630 CET on the Friday afternoon.

Over the years, the Rok Cup Superfinal has become the most challenging and competitive event of the season in the Mini category, reserved for youngsters aged under 13. On the South Garda Karting circuit in Lonato, Italy, there were no less than 130 drivers entered for the 2019 edition and it was the talented Jamaican Alex Powell who triumphed brilliantly with the Energy Corse team. Just 12 years old in September and supported by the Mercedes F1 Junior Team, this new young karting star is definitely destined for a magnificent career.

2nd in the 2018 edition of the Rok Cup Superfinal, Alex Powell had revenge to take. The young Jamaican hopeful gave his best during the entire meeting to emerge in the lead of a very intense Final. “I am very proud of him,” confirmed his coach Mike Wilson, six times World Karting Champion as a driver. “Alex managed his efforts perfectly. He has matured and has been able to attack when necessary to take the lead at the right time. We knew he was very fast. But in this race, he also managed to apply my advice and that of his team to win this highly coveted competition.”

Front row in the Final
Faced with 129 rivals, Alex Powell had no opportunity to make mistakes. While he hoped to improve on 19th place in Timed Practice, the Jamaican immediately showed his opponents his great competitiveness by moving up to 1st place in his first heat, with the fastest lap. 2nd overall after his four Qualifying Heats after another win, Alex played a major role at the front of the field in the Final behind the wheel of his Energy Corse chassis.

“I made a good start by immediately following in the wake of my opponent. We found ourselves in a group of about five drivers capable of winning, we had to stay focused and not give up. I felt the pressure behind me and managed to take the lead on lap 4. Then another competitor came back, so it was intense,” Alex said.

Talent and determination
Mike Wilson and the Energy Corse staff have been ready with advice and Alex Powell managed the incessant duels well, showing strong mental forethought. At the beginning of the last lap, the Jamaican was still 2nd, but he was ideally positioned in the leader’s slipstream, before passing him unstoppably under braking at the paddock bend.

“From then on, I needed to make no mistakes, to protect myself well when in the last corners. I wasn’t really sure I would win until I saw the chequered flag. I was full of emotion. The Rok Cup Superfinal is an incredibly long and challenging world-class event, with drivers of several dozen different nationalities. It’s great, especially as we scored a double for the Energy Corse team with 2nd place for my Russian team-mate Dmitry Matveev. I really wanted to win such a race before I move up to the Junior category, it is now done. I really want to thank my family, my coach, my team and all those who support me in my sporting career.”

24 Qualifying Heats out of 36 took place on Saturday, 7th September on the Alahärmä track as part of the FIA Karting World Championship – OK & Junior. Although it is impossible to know the actual and final positions before Sunday at midday, the day highlighted very positive performances by some participants, while others were falling behind due to the pitfalls of the weather and the very selective Finnish circuit.

Especially important in Finland, the weather over the Power Parkwas changing rapidly. It was fine in the early morning, but the track was still wet after the nighttime showers. The racing lines dried quickly under the combined action of the sun and the karts, but the parts in the shade still had wide wet patches. Before the lunch break, the track was completely dry, but the clouds were increasing in the Alahärmä sky. At the beginning of the afternoon, heavy rain changed the situation and continued until the end of the day.

Many crashes, not necessarily caused by contact, and decreasing in frequency, influenced the rankings over the Heats. Regressions and retirements affected several favourites, while penalties fell like the rain. A rare phenomenon, the public was already in attendance in large numbers in the grandstands during the first races of the morning, and the Finnish flags fluttered to show the sporting enthusiasm and national pride of the spectators. The gradual deterioration of the weather did not affect their motivation throughout the day.

Advantage Valtanen in OK
Juho Valtanen (FIN) took full advantage of his 2nd position in Qualifying Practice to make a great run in his Heats with three wins and a 5th place finish. Dilano Vant’hoff (NLD) progressed significantly with good consistency and a win to his credit, which allowed him to be ahead of three tied drivers: Kirill Smal (RUS), Rasmus Joutsimies (FIN) and Gabriel Bortoleto (BRA). Joshua Dufek (CHE) showed convincing performance levels while the title holder Lorenzo Travisanutto (ITA) was also back in the leading group with great intelligence.

Dino Beganovic (SWE) had a win, but lost ground in a Heat, as did Dexter Patterson (GBR), who recovered many places. Both hampered by a retirement, Gabriele Mini’ (ITA) and Nikolas Pirtttilahti (FIN) drove good races to try to catch up. Joseph Turney lost out because of a mechanical problem followed by a second retirement. Three wins in Junior for Ten Brinke 4th fastest in Qualifying Practice, Thomas Ten Brink (NLD) had three great victories before closing the day with a 2nd place. He made the difference against Laurens Van Hoepen (NLD) and Rafael Chaves Camara (BRA), with two wins each. Meanwhile, Andrea Kimi Antonelli (ITA) finished with two victories to stay in the leading group. James Wharton (AUS)was successful in coming back to the top along with Josep M Marti Sobrepera (ESP) and Ugo Ugochukwu. The poleman Nikita Bedrin (RUS) lost some places without losing all of his chances.

A retirement in the first Heat was costly for Arvid Lindblad (GBR), but he didn’t give up. On Sunday morning, 12 Qualifying Heats, four in OK and eight in Junior, will still be contested before the release of the names of the 34 finalists in each category who can fight for the two FIA Karting World Championship titles later in the afternoon. The weather forecast again includes some rainy periods.
