The 61st season of the German Kart Championship started at the Arena E in Muelsen at the end of April and saw attractive races with beaming winners throughout the year. For the finale, the kart racing series travelled to Italy for its second foreign guest appearance. The venue was the 1,300-metre track in Franciacorta. The course was opened only two years ago and provided a perfect backdrop for the season finale. The fields of the three championship classes DSKM, DSKC and DJKM were again international. The finale was supported by the simulator manufacturer O-ROUGE.

The focus this time was on the title fight. No decision had been made before the final races. In the end, there were six different winners in the races and a big surprise in the juniors. While Stan Pex (DSKM) and Niels Troeger (DSKC) drove to their triumphs in the shifter kart categories without any real threat, Luke Kornder caused a surprise in the junior category. Having arrived in fourth place, he passed them all to take the title.

DSKM: Birel ART double win with Vasile and Bertuca

Guest driver Maksim Orlov (Modena Kart) set the best time in qualifying and led the field in the heats. Daniel Vasile (Birel ART Racing KSW) already made his presence felt with two wins in these. New conditions changed the situation for the finals on Sunday. Rain made the choice of tyres a lottery. For the first race, rain tyres were the best decision and Vasile prevailed from the start. By the time the chequered flag fell, he had a clear lead. Behind him Stan Pex (SP Motorsport) followed, who thereby secured his second DSKM title after 2019. Cristian Bertuca (Birel ART Racing KSW) was third.

The track was dry again for the second race and the spectators witnessed a thrilling battle at the front. The decision was made on the last lap: Bertuca passed his team-mate Vasile and celebrated his first DSKM success. The top three was rounded off by the new champion Stan Pex. “Apart from one race, we were always on the podium and proved our strength. This is my second title and the tenth for our family. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to this,” the Dutchman was happy about the success. The winner of the Masters classification was Thomas Neumann (Birel ART Racing KSW).

Championship final standings DSKM:
1st Stan Pex (209 points)
2nd Daniel Vasile (150 points)
3rd Tim Troeger (135 points)
4th Jorrit Pex (132 points)
5th David Trefilov (126 points)

DSKC: Niels Troeger takes title with fourth race win

The field of the DMSB Shifter Kart Cup was again strong at the finale. 36 drivers went to the start and we witnessed the first pole position of Dutchman Siep Kuypers (CRG Holland). In the heats, it was Thomas Rackl (Maranello SRP Factory Team) who took pole position for the first final. In this the field was shaken up. It rained heavily in parts and everyone started with rain tyres. From the second starting position, Niels Troeger (Maranello SRP Factory Team) drove to the top and celebrated a clear victory – with his fourth win of the season, the title was firmly in his grasp. Behind him there were numerous duels for the remaining podium places. Menyhert Krozser (TB Racing Team) finished second ahead of Gianni Andrisani (Mach1 Motorsport – Kartschmie.de), Nikolas Roos (CRG Holland) and Tom Adams (Maranello SRP Factory Team).

In the afternoon race, the entire field started on slicks and saw Linus Hensen (Mach1 Motorsport – Kartschmie.de) in great form. With a good start, he drove into the leading pack and took P1 in the initial half of the race. A group of five hung on his heels and he held the lead until the end – but Hensen fended off all attacks to celebrate his victory as he crossed the finish line. Roos came second this time ahead of Troeger, Krozser and Emma Felbermeyer (TB Racing Team). For title holder Niels Troeger it was a historic win. He was the first driver ever to win a title in the DKM and the DSKC. “What a year! After winning the World Cup, I’m really happy to win the DSKC as well. I thank the whole team and all the people who support me,” beamed the winner. By winning the championship title, Troeger can also look forward to a test drive in a GT4 sports car. This is provided by series partner GTC Race.

There was a moment of shock for Dutchman Jeroen Bos (SP Motorsport) – in the warm-up on Sunday he was unable to avoid a defective kart and ended up in the track barrier. Participation in the races was no longer possible. However, he made up for it in the evening by winning the Masters title.

Championship final standings DSKC:
1st Niels Troeger (239 points)
2nd Thomas Rackl (184 points)
3rd Linus Hensen (167 points)
4th Gianni Andrisani (116 points)
5th Tom Adams (115 points)

DJKM: Luke Kornder rides to the title from a chasing position

The weekend was particularly exciting for the juniors. Before the final, four youngsters still had a chance to win the title. On Saturday, however, another driver set the tone: Markas Silkunas (SIUSKPIGIAU.LT – PILENAI RACING) from Lithuania won the qualifying and also defended his top position over the heats. However, he relinquished the reins in the rain on Sunday. The track dried for the first run and half of the field relied on slicks – including overall leader Marc Gerstenkorn (TB Racing Team). But it became clear early on that this was not the right choice and the Swiss lost important points in the title fight. Things went much better for his direct rivals. While guest driver Amin Kara Osman (SIM-ON) won, co-favourites Luke Kornder (SIM-ON), Cemil Bayyati (Lanari Racing Team) and Phil Colin Strenge (ADAC Wuerttemberg e.V.) followed in the top five and postponed the title decision to the last race of the year.

On a still wet track Kornder got a perfect start in the second final and drove to victory. He was therefore the new champion. “That was an exciting weekend. I came into the final in fourth place and didn’t expect to be at the front in the end. That makes it all the nicer to have achieved this. A big thank you to my family and the whole team,” the winner summed up his emotions. His team-mate Kara Osman followed in second place ahead of Bayyati, who, however, was subsequently taken out of the classification due to being underweight. New third position was Strenge followed by Luigi Antonio Cocchianella (TSUNAMI RT) and Silkunas. Winner of the rookie classification was Dutchman Tom Papenburg (TB Racing Team).

Final championship standings DJKM:
1st Luke Kornder (214 points)
2nd Phil Colin Strenge (212 points)
3rd Marc Gerstenkorn (207 points)
4th Cemil Bayyati (186 points)
5th David Gorcica (160 points)

The team classification is part of the DKM tradition. This year, there was no way around Maranello SRP Factory Racing. The team surrounding Maik Siebecke can look back on a successful season and celebrated the win on the podium. “This has been an unbelievable year and the best we have had so far in the DKM. Besides Niels’ title, four other drivers finished the season in the top five of their class. On top of that, we won the World Cup and the team championship. But we couldn’t have done it without my whole team and our partners, so a big thank you to everyone involved.”

Mini 60 Series by Chrono Karting: First win of the season for Dane Matteis Stigsen

The young drivers of the Mini 60 Series by Chrono Karting were also represented in the supporting programme at the season finale. The 16 youngsters delivered close races and great fights over the two days. After the pre-final, Andrii Kruglyk (TSUNAMI RT) led the field. In the final, Matteis Stigsen (CiPe: Care Kart-Racing) had the best start and pulled away from the field. In the course of the 13 race laps, he built up a clear lead and celebrated his first win of the season. He was in a correspondingly good mood in the interview later on: “I am very happy about the victory. The start was good and then I tried to hold my position. A big thanks to my father and grandpa who set me up with a perfect kart.” Second-placed Sebastian Riedel (DS Corse) delivered a strong recovery. From the back of the field, he moved up to second place. Constantin Papst (Nees Racing) came third ahead of Marc Alexander Reistrup and Charlotte Tille (Nees Racing).

With the falling of the last chequered flag, an era of the German Kart Championship also came to an end. In future, the ADAC e.V. will take over the organisation of Germany’s highest kart racing series. Series coordinator Stefan Wagner therefore looked back emotionally on the past decades: “It was not an easy weekend for the whole team. Everyone put a lot of heart and soul into the championship and the feedback from the participants and teams confirms us. There were a lot of great moments and we even reshaped karting to some extent. We were one of the first series with a race control and a live stream. I would like to thank the entire team for the many years of cooperation. I also wish the ADAC e.V. every success in continuing the DKM and look forward to seeing how the championship develops in the future.”

The Erftlandring in Kerpen is the venue for the fourth event of the German Kart Championship this coming weekend

After races in Mülsen, Genk (Belgium) and Wackersdorf, the DKM squad travels on to Kerpen. The 1,107-metre Erftlandring has a long tradition in German motorsport and is an integral part of the DKM race calendar. In the past decades, the circuit in North Rhine-Westphalia has often been the starting point of a successful motorsport career.

However, due to lignite mining in the Erft region, the modernisation of the circuit came to a standstill in recent years. Since the future has become clear, however, the Kart-Club Kerpen e.V. has been working continuously on the track and its surroundings. In addition to new asphalt, the paddock has been extended, new track boundaries built and the public facilities renewed.

In terms of sport, the fans can look forward to exciting racing days. In the German Shifter Kart Championship, Dutchman Stan Pex (SP Motorsport) is on his way to his second title in Germany’s top kart racing series since winning in 2019. Before the rounds in Kerpen, he already has a 55-point lead over his brother and the reigning champion Jorrit Pex. The best German driver is currently Tim Tröger (Maranello SRP Racing Team) in third place.

In the DMSB Shifter Kart Cup, the newly crowned KZ2 World Cup winner Niels Tröger (Maranello SRP Racing Team) has his first race after his great success in Wackersdorf. There he brought a World Cup title back to Germany after 43 years. In the DSKC category he also holds all the aces and travels to Erftland with a 54-point lead. His direct pursuers are Linus Hensen (Mach1 Motorsport – Kartschmie.de), Juliano Holzem (CPB Sport) and Thomas Rackl (Maranello SRP Racing Team). The trio is currently separated by only eight championship points.

The battle in the German Junior Kart Championship is also close. Marc Gerstenkorn (TB Racing Team) goes into the semi-final as the leader, but he can’t rest on his laurels. Phil Colin Strenge (ADAC Württemberg e.V.) is trailing him by two points. Cemil Bayyati (Lanari Racing Team) and the Czech David Gorcica (Forza Racing) are still in third and fourth positions.

In the supporting programme, the youngsters from the Mini 60 Series by Chrono Karting are again represented. Among the favourites is Lenn Abbas (Rodopi Racing Academy), the Cologne native started in the bambini school of the Kart-Club Kerpen e.V. and already won the races in Mülsen and Wackersdorf. A total of 17 young drivers will be competing.

GTC Race gives away free tickets for the season finale

All participants of the DKM in Kerpen can look forward to up to three free tickets for the final of the GTC Race at the Nürburgring. During registration, every driver will receive a voucher, which can be used to generate up to three free tickets. The roots of the GTC Race go back to 1990. The sponsorship programme is unique: selected GT4 drivers will be sighted at the end of the season, and the winner will receive a free cockpit in a GT3 sports car for two years. Series organiser Ralph Monschauer will be in Kerpen at the weekend and will be available to answer questions from interested parties. The series organizer, Ralph Monschauer, will be on-site in Kerpen over the weekend and is at the disposal of those who are interested for any questions.

Live timing, live stream and social media accompany the DKM

In 2012, the DKM was the first race series worldwide to start with a live stream and eleven years later, it again presents extensive coverage. Starting with the heats on Saturday, all events will be broadcast in a live stream on www.kart-dm.de. In addition, there is already live timing from Friday noon – also at www.kart-dm.de.

The final round of the Champions of the Future Euro Series was a great success, confirming the quality of the organisation by promoter RGMMC

The finale at Franciacorta was once again very exciting to watch, with perfect weather conditions from Wednesday to Saturday. Lewis Wherrell, who took pole position and led after the heats and Super Heats, claimed a well-deserved victory in OK-Junior to become the new 2023 Champion. In OK, Joe Turney made his mark on his return to the series by winning the Final ahead of Alex Powell, who took the crown. Now it’s on to the FIA Karting World Championship, which all the competitors have prepared for in the best possible conditions!

Valencia in Spain in March, Třinec in the Czech Republic in May, Rødby in Denmark in June, Cremona in Italy in July and Franciacorta in Italy in September. The five circuits chosen by the Champions of the Future Euro Series in 2023, matching FIA Karting, have made for an exciting and interesting year. The efforts made by the RGMMC group have been rewarded: a high quality reception, close relations with competitors and circuit managers, adapted timetables, trophy design, constant improvements to race control, communication around the event and monitoring of the races thanks to optimised live streaming, all benefiting from constant investment. At Franciacorta, a new feature has been added. During the heats and Super Heats, the TV broadcast provided information on the moment when the drivers chose to fit their extra new tyres.

OK-Junior: Lewis Wherrell from start to finish

Already a winner in Denmark, Lewis Wherrell (Forza Racing) added a second very significant victory to his list of honours, as it enabled him to be crowned Champion. The Final at Franciacorta wasn’t all plain sailing, however. Starting from the front, the young Briton soon found himself under pressure from Thibaut Ramaekers (VDK Racing). But the Belgian couldn’t find an opening and succumbed to the comeback of his compatriot Dries Van Langendonck (Forza Racing). Van Langendonck seized the opportunity to attack and take 2nd place.

The weekend’s revelation, Brazilian Augustus Toniolo (KR Motorsport), also made his move, while Ramaekers dropped to 5th place, overtaken a little later by Scott Kin Lindblom (Tony Kart Racing Team). Ramaekers lost another place, despite setting the fastest lap of the race, allowing Van Langendonck to secure the runner-up spot at the expense of his rival.

It’s difficult to list all the drivers who performed well near Lake Garda, but we must salute the comeback of the recent FIA Karting European Champion, Ukrainian Oleksandr Bondarev (Prema Racing), who finished 50th in Timed Qualifying and 6th in the Final, where he gained 16 positions. Fighting for a place on the podium, Spaniard Christian Costoya (Parolin Motorsport) and Italian Iacopo Martinese (KR Motorsport) touched and dropped back to 7th and 8th respectively. Sweden’s Elliot Kaczynski (Ward Racing) ended up in 8th place. The top 10 was completed by Finland’s Sebastian Lehtimäki (Parolin Motorsport), despite the return of Germany’s Taym Saleh (Sauber Academy) from 27th place.

Romanian David Cosma Cristofor (KR Motorsport) confirmed his progress by finishing 6th under the chequered flag. But an incorrect front fairing position penalised him and saw him drop back to 13th ahead of Kirill Dzitiev (Tony Kart Racing Team), the big loser of the day who started 2nd.

Final series standings

1 – WHERRELL Lewis (GBR) (Exprit / TM / Vega) 243 points2 – VAN LANGENDONCK Dries (BEL) (Exprit / TM / Vega) 192 points3 – RAMAEKERS Thibaut (BEL) (KR / IAME / Vega) 192 points4 – MARTINESE Iaccopo (ITA) (KR / IAME / Vega) 166 points5 – BONDAREV Oleksandr (UKR) (KR / IAME / Vega) 161 points6 – ANTONOV Stepan (KR / IAME / Vega) 148 points7 – COSTOYA Christian (ESP) (Parolin / TV / Vega) 127 points8 – DRUMMOND Zac (GBR) (Parolin / TV / Vega) 114 points9 – DZITIEV Kirill (Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega) 105 points10 – ILIFFE Jack (USA) (Parolin / TV / Vega) 97 points

OK: Turney, Powell and the Prema Racing drivers take centre stage

With three weeks to go until the FIA Karting’s big event, the event naturally had a World Championship flavour. But from the start of Timed Practice, the drivers and their teams were fully focused on this final round of the Champions of the Future Euro Series, with the aim of being one of the finalists, or even a place on the podium! Thailand’s Enzo Tarnvanichkul (Prema Racing) took pole position and held on to his place after the heats. But he crashed out in the Super Heat and it was Britain’s Joe Turney (KR Motorsport) who took 1st place on the Final grid.

Turney got off to the best start ahead of France’s Louis Iglesias (CRG Racing Team) and Emanuele Olivieri (Birel Art Racing), who had made considerable progress since the previous rounds. British driver Nathan Tye (Sodikart), who started 5th, was forced to retire with great regret. On the fifth of 24 laps, Iglesias tried his luck on Turney. The manoeuvre benefited Jamaican Alex Powell (Prema Racing) who took the lead in the Final, while Turney emerged victorious from this intense duel with Iglesias.

Just as he was hoping to finish on the final podium of the series, Brazilian Gabriel Gomez (CRG Racing Team) lost all his chances when he tangled with Dmitry Matveev (KR Motorsport). At the front, Turney got the better of Powell again and brilliantly won the Final ahead of Powell, who was delighted to be crowned 2023 Champion. Two penalties handed down by the stewards set back South Africa’s Luviwe Sambudla (KR Motorsport) and Tarnvanichkul, who had finished 3rd and 5th respectively. The British driver Kean Nakamura-Berta (Prema Racing) put in a fine performance at the end of the race to complete the top three ahead of Iglesias and Rene Lammers (Parolin Motorsport), who moved up 10 places.

Behind Olivieri in 6th place, the Czech driver Eliska Babickova (Forza Racing) claimed a fine 7th place ahead of Poland’s Jan Przyrowski (Tony Kart Racing Team) and Latvia’s Tomass Stolcermanis (Energy Corse).

Final series standings

1 – POWELL Alex (JAM) (KR / IAME / MG) 231 points2 – NAKAMURA-BERTA Kean (GBR) (KR / IAME / MG) 212 points3 – TURNEY Joe (GBR) (KR / IAME / MG) 190 points4 – TARNVANICHKUL Enzo (THA) (KR / IAME / MG) 188 points5 – GOMEZ Gabriel (ITA) (CRG / IAME / MG) 181 points6 – STOLCERMANIS Tomass (LVA) (Energy / TM / MG) 112 points7 – PRZYROWSKI Jan (POL) (Tony Kart / Vortex / MG) 112 points8 – TYE Nathan (GBR) (Sodi / TM / MG) 107 points9 – POULAIN Arthur (FRA) (KR / IAME / MG) 105 points10 – PAVAN Sebastiano (ITA) (Tony Kart / Vortex / MG) 102 points

2022 KZ World Champion Viktor Gustafsson (SWE) and CRG factory driver has just recorded his seventh International Karting Ranking (IKR) result of the season at Wackersdorf. His 2nd place in the Mondokart.com FIA Karting World Championship – KZ and his consistency in the other KZ events on the FIA Karting International Sporting Calendar that count towards the IKR means that he is now in 1st place in the KZ category. With 2621 points, he is ahead of the new reigning champion Paolo Ippolito and Matteo Vigano. 3rd in the World Championship, Stan Pex has moved up three places in the KZ rankings

The KZ category is part of Class 1, which uses CIK-FIA homologated equipment. KZ is the queen of karting. Powered by powerful engines with 6-speed gearboxes, it is capable of breathtaking performances. It’s the domain of factory teams and professional drivers, and is home to some of the biggest names in karting.

At 19 years of age, Sweden’s Viktor Gustafsson has a flattering record of achievements.
Having competed internationally since 2016 in the Mini category, Viktor moved up to OK-Junior the following year with some interesting albeit inconsistent results with the Ward Racing team. Sixth in the Winter Cup at Lonato, sixth also at Sarno for the opening round of the European Championship, he eventually finished 19th and missed out on qualification for the World Championship Final at PFI, but scored his first victory at Adria in the WSK Final Cup on his first appearance with the Tony Kart Racing Team.

He moved up to OK for the 2018 season in the colours of the Kosmic Racing Department with varying fortunes. Anonymously 41st in the European Championship, he achieved his best result in the World Championship at Alahärmä in Finland, finishing 11th.

A rapid rise in the gearbox categories

Viktor made his debut in KZ2 during the 2019 season with Kosmic, once he had reached the required age of 15, and showed good competitiveness from the following year. He won the European KZ2 Championship at the age of 16 with Birel ART Racing and confirmed his place in the top 10 of the KZ2 International Super Cup at Lonato. In 2021, he had to make the step up to the KZ category. Eighth in the European Championship, he finished fourth in the World Championship, won by his compatriot Noah Milell. He joined the official CRG team for 2022. He didn’t have much success in the European Championship in OK, but made up for it by winning his first KZ World Championship at Le Mans. Now a member of the exclusive club of top KZ drivers, Viktor finished fourth in the 2023 European Championship and made a remarkable comeback to finish second in the World Championship at Wackersdorf.

On Sunday morning, the Super Heats had already given a glimpse of the competition at Wackersdorf, Germany. But that was nothing compared to the afternoon’s Finals, which produced a breathtaking spectacle with many unexpected twists and turns. At the end of a memorable FIA Karting competition, Italy’s Paolo Ippolito was crowned KZ World Champion, Germany’s Niels Tröger won the KZ2 World Cup and Italy’s Davide Forè added the FIA Karting International Super Cup – KZ2 Masters to his impressive list of honours.

The constant fine weather over the Upper Palatinate for several days made a major contribution to the success of an FIA Karting event of rare intensity, with 25° in the morning and 30° in the afternoon. The 1190m Pro Kart Raceland circuit and the quality of the organisation were also major factors in this success. Crowded into the grandstand, on the balconies and all around the track, the public enjoyed a first-class sporting spectacle. Although the LeCont tyres used in the three categories were put under pressure, they were not criticised. FIA Karting President Akbar Ebrahim made a point of being present in Wackersdorf. Broadcast live from Friday afternoon on Motorsport.tv, the FIA Karting website and its networks, the event attracted a large international audience.

Mondokart.com FIA Karting World Championship – KZ: Deserved crown for Ippolito and KR
David Trefilov (DEU-Maranello/TM Kart/LeCont) confirmed his performance in the Qualifying Heats by winning Super Heat A ahead of Tom Leuillet (FRA-Tony Kart/Vortex/LeCont) and Jérémy Iglesias (FRA- CRG/TM Kart/LeCont). Emilien Denner (FRA-Sodi/TM Kart/LeCont) was well ahead of Paolo Ippolito (ITA-KR/IAME/LeCont) and Stan Pex (NLD-KR/TM Kart/LeCont) in Super Heat B.

Trefilov and Ippolito shared the front row of the grid in the Final, ahead of Denner and Pex, then Iglesias and Leuillet. As soon as the red lights went out, a series of incidents, not serious but not without consequences, affected the running of the Championship. Several protagonists such as Trefilov, Denner, Iglesias and Leuillet had to retire on the first lap. Danilo Albanese (ITA-KR/IAME/LeCont), then Senna van Walstijn (NLD-Sodi/TM Kart/LeCont), Pedro Hiltbrand (ESP- Birel ART/TM Kart/LeCont) and Giuseppe Palomba (ITA-Birel ART/TM Kart/LeCont) added to the list of those who failed to reach the finish. Viktor Gustafsson (SWE- CRG/TM Kart/LeCont) took advantage of the situation to make up ten places towards the front of the race. Positioned almost two seconds behind Ippolito at the halfway stage, he looked capable of pulling off a feat. But Ippolito had enough reserves and motivation to take the coveted victory with a lead of almost five tenths. Driving for the KR Motorsport team, he gave Dino Chiesa’s Kart Republic brand its first KZ world title.

The FIA Karting World Cup – KZ2 goes to Tröger and Maranello
Maksim Orlov (Parolin/TM Kart/LeCont) won Super Heat A ahead of Thomas Imbourg (FRA-Sodi/TM Kart/LeCont) and Alex Powell (JAM-KR/IAME/LeCont), while Kean Nakamura-Berta (GBR-KR/IAME/LeCont) won Super Heat B ahead of Niels Tröger (DEU-Maranello/TM Kart/LeCont) and Robert Kindervater (DEU-Birel ART/TM Kart/LeCont). Tröger and Powell were on the front row of the grid for the Final ahead of Imbourg and Daniel Vasile (ROU-Birel ART/TM Kart/LeCont), then Kindervater and Nikolas Roos (ZAF-CRG/TM Kart/LeCont).

Powell immediately set off in pursuit of Tröger, while Vasile was firmly entrenched in third position. The field thinned out with the early disappearance of several drivers at the start of the race, including Kindervater, Orlov and Roos. Nakamura-Berta had been held up in 21st position after the start. Powell reduced his gap to the leader to two tenths around the halfway mark, but was unable to attack. Tröger gradually extended his lead and won the Cup by 1.4″. It was the first German success at world level for several decades, and the first on home soil. The Maranello SRP Factory Team had not yet won a world title. The official team of the Italian marque Maranello has close links with Germany, particularly through its manager Maik Siebecke.

FIA Karting International Masters Super Cup – KZ2 for Forè and Sodi
Alessandro Manetti (ITA-CRG/TM Kart/LeCont) took the lead over Davide Forè (ITA-Sodi/TM Kart/LeCont) in Super Heat A, while Daniel Bray (NZL-Parolin/TM Kart/LeCont) won Super Heat B ahead of Mirko Mizzoni (ITA-Italcorse/TM Kart/LeCont).

Bray was on pole position for the start of the Final alongside Forè, with Manetti and Mizzoni on the second row. Forè jumped into the lead as soon as the lights went out, ahead of Bray and Manetti. Manetti overtook Bray, who retired with a technical problem on lap 4. Thomas Mich (FRA-Birel ART/TM Kart/LeCont) got off to a good start and moved up to third place. Forè was already 2” ahead of the runner-up, but Manetti then set a very fast pace. Thanks to his great speed, he caught up with the leader at the halfway point. After preparing his strategy, he went on the attack on lap 21, but met with stiff resistance from Forè. Meanwhile, Mich defended his third position against Mizzoni at the head of a chasing group. Manetti came back to Forè on the last lap, but again without success. Forè won the race by 15 thousandths of a second and, at 49 years of age, added a new world title to his list of honours thanks this time to the Renda Motorsport team. Another multiple champion, Manetti, at 52, had nevertheless demonstrated a pleasing competitiveness. With his third place finish, Mich, at the age of 35, made a comeback to the internationale competition.

Williams has signed the 2023 FIA Karting champion Oleksandr Bondarev as its new member of the F1 academy.

Williams Racing today announces young karting star Oleksandr Bondarev as the latest member of its Driver Academy. The 14-year-old Ukrainian has already demonstrated his talents behind the wheel with multiple karting achievements in his junior career. He was notably crowned 2023 CIK-FIA Karting European Champion, becoming the first Ukrainian driver in the history of karting to win the championship.

Oleksandr, or ‘Sasha’, began his journey in karting in 2014 at the young age of five. By age seven, he became the youngest Ukrainian karting champion and winner of the Rotax Max Challenge Ukraine. Since then he has continued to climb the karting ladder with an impressive record of wins, podiums and pole positions.

As part of the Williams Racing Driver Academy, Oleksandr will have the team’s full support and guidance in nurturing his talent and developing his skills throughout his progression in the junior categories of motorsport. The rising star has recently joined PREMA’s karting team for the WSK Euro Series event in Franciacorta and will compete in this year’s FIA Karting World Championship that’s set to take place in October.

Oleksandr Bondarev: “I am so excited to join the Williams Racing Driver Academy. Williams Racing is one of the most iconic teams in motorsport, having had some of the best drivers in the sport race for them and it is an honour to have the chance to be part of that history. Since I was five years old, when I began karting, I dreamt about Formula 1. I have a long way to go, of course, but this is a huge step for me. I always knew that becoming part of an F1 young driver programme was crucial and I will work hard to repay the confidence and belief which James and Sven have placed in me.”

Sven Smeets, Sporting Director, Williams Racing: “We’re delighted to announce that Oleksandr has joined the Williams Racing Driver Academy. He’s a highly regarded young talent that we’ve monitored for some time. At just 14 years old, he already has several impressive achievements to his name, including the 2023 FIA-CIK European OKJ Championship. Oleksandr has shown a lot of potential at an early age and we look forward to supporting his development as he continues his journey in karting.”

Whether it was the large gaps between the fastest drivers or the relative under-performance of some of the best, Qualifying Practice at the FIA Karting event in Cremona (ITA) created a surprising situation for the rest of the competition. Louis Iglesias (FRA) was fastest in OK, Thibaut Ramaekers (BEL) dominated Junior Qualifying and Wojciech Woda (POL) secured pole position in the Academy Trophy

65 drivers took part in the OK class, 81 in the OK-Junior class and 40 in the Academy class, making a total of 186 entries. Tyres were supplied by MG Tyres for OK and Vega for OK-Junior and the Academy Trophy. The 100% sustainable P1 Racing Fuel helps to reduce the competition’s carbon footprint.

The FIA Karting OK and Junior European Championships and the FIA Karting Academy Trophy at stake this weekend on the Italian circuit of Cremona could well give rise to some superb sporting confrontations following the first ranking established during Qualifying Practice. The Cremona Karting track revealed its highly selective nature from the very first stage of the competition. However, conditions were very good for Qualifying on Friday afternoon. Under clear skies, with plenty of sunshine and 28° on the thermometer, it was hard to wish for a more favourable climate

Impressive pole position for Iglesias in OK

Entering as a wild card, young French driver Louis Iglesias, nephew of 2020 KZ World Champion Jérémy Iglesias, caused a sensation by setting a time of 47”781 in the first session, given his very limited experience of the OK category. The provisional leader of the FIA Karting European Championship – OK, Dutchman Rene Lammers (NLD) took 2nd place in Qualifying ahead of Thailand’s Enzo Tarnvanichkul. Two Italians, Nicolò Cuman and Luigi Coluccio, completed the top five. Lammers’ direct title rival, Gabriel Gomez (ITA), finished 17th, Alex Powell (JAM), 3rd in the Championship, finished 28th and 4th-placed Tomass Stolcermanis (LVA) was 22nd in Qualifying.

2- Rene Lammers (NLD)

3- Enzo Tarnvanichkul (THA)

4- Nicolò Cuman (ITA)

Junior: Ramaekers very fast in Qualifying

With his superb time of 48”605 in Session 2, Belgian Thibaut Ramaekers thoroughly deserved pole position in the FIA Karting European Championship – Junior at Cremona. His compatriot Dries van Langendonck set an excellent lap of 48”705 in the first session, while Australian Lewis Francis clocked 49”082 in the third session. Ramaekers was more than 4 tenths faster than his runner-up Christian Costoya in Session 2, a considerable gap at this level, which made Thibaut’s performance all the more impressive. Provisional leader Oleksandr Bondarev (UKR) was only 29th. Lewis Wherrell (GBR), 3rd in the Championship, was 8th in Qualifying, Zac Drummond (GBR), 4th in the Championship, was 20th and Iacopo Martinese (ITA) was 5th in both Qualifying and the provisional standings.

Poland’s Wojciech Woda made his presence felt by setting the fastest time in the first timed session of the FIA Karting Academy Trophy at Cremona in 49’720. Currently 2nd in the provisional standings, Spain’s Hugo Marti was 2nd in Qualifying ahead of New Zealander Arthur Broughan. Benett Gáspár (HUN) came 4th and Rocco Coronel (NLD) 5th. Initially ranked 4th, Lisa Billard (FRA) lost 10 places when her best lap was cancelled for crossing the white line at the pit exit. 3rd in the Trophy, Marius Barry-Berg (NOR) was only 22nd in Qualifying, while Vasileios Apostolidis (GRC), 5th in the standings, was 12th in practice.

The details of the third edition of FIA Motorsport Games is out which will take place in October in Spain with 26 events lined-up so far.

The third edition of the FIA Motorsport Games will take place from 23-27 October 2024 in Spain, with the Generalitat Valenciana and Circuit Ricardo Tormo set to host the popular multidisciplinary event that unites athletes from all four corners of the globe in a unique spirit of sporting competition.

The third running of the Games – jointly launched by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and SRO Motorsports Group – promises to be the biggest yet. Not only are all 16 categories that made up the 2022 event confirmed to return, but they will be joined by ten new ones, increasing opportunities for drivers from National Sporting Authorities (ASNs) worldwide to vie for medals under the flag of their home country.

This growth underscores the momentum that has been building since the highly successful inaugural event in 2019, which took place in the Italian capital of Rome and at the nearby Vallelunga circuit before moving to Marseille in France last year and expanding from six categories to 16.

The 2022 Games set a new record for the number of nations ever to contest a single motorsport event. Over four days of action spread across the Circuit Paul Ricard, Autocross Veynois, and the surrounding region, 463 athletes representing 72 ASNs did battle for glory in front of 45,000 enthusiastic spectators, with Team Italy ultimately prevailing courtesy of a haul of three gold medals and one silver.

The torch now passes to Spain as the category count increases again to 26, spanning the full spectrum of the sport from Circuit Racing to Electric Street – that includes Auto Slalom and Karting Slalom – Karting, Esports, Off-road, and Rally. The original founding categories of the FIA Motorsport Games – GT, GT Sprint, Touring Car, Formula 4, Drift, and Esports – continue to feature prominently, alongside a new medal opportunity in Esports Rally.

In Karting, the Junior and Senior Sprint categories will return, while Karting Endurance will welcome female/male pairings aged 14 and over. The new addition in this discipline is Karting Mini, which will be introduced for drivers aged between eight and 11.

The Rally disciplines account for the greatest number of new categories. Rally2, Rally4, and Historic Rally have each been separated into three contests – one for Gravel specialists, one for Tarmac specialists, and one comprising both surfaces for all-rounders, offering no fewer than nine possibilities to win medals. The new Rally All-Stars category, meanwhile, is open to drivers listed on the FIA priority list who are not currently eligible to enter Rally2 or Rally4.

Cross Car Junior and Senior return alongside the new Cross Car Eco category, which complements the existing electric competitions in Auto Slalom and Karting Slalom. Further new categories remain under consideration.

In addition to the coveted trophy for the winning nation outright, there will be regional trophies for Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Middle East/North Africa (MENA). There will also be a NewStar trophy for the nation whose upcoming talents shine brightest in the grassroots categories and an AllStar trophy for the top-performing nation in categories reserved for more established drivers.

Further information and details will follow, before official entries for the 2024 FIA Motorsport Games open early next year.

The pole positions went to Celenta (KZ2), Baglin (MINI Gr.3), Di Pietrantonio (MINI Gr.3 U10), Yildirim (OK-N) and David Cosma Cristofor (OK-N Junior). Further heats to follow on Saturday, as the Finals of the fourth and closing round will be on Sunday, June 25th

The intense heat has arrived in Sarno to kick off the fourth and final round of the WSK Open Series, featuring the MINI, KZ2, OK-N and OK-N Junior categories. This event at the Circuito Internazionale Napoli will determine the champions of the 2023 Open Series. The qualifying sessions and initial heats officially started the Sarno weekend on Friday, which is characterized by extremely high temperatures, with the air exceeding 34°C and the track reaching 70°C. These conditions undoubtedly make the competitive challenge more difficult.

KZ2 – The fastest of practice is the home hero Celenta

An exciting challenge immediately unfolded in the crowded KZ2 category, with over 80 of the most competitive drivers in international karting present at this event. In the three qualifying heats, the overall fastest turned out to be Francesco Celenta (#98 Parolin Motorsport/Parolin-TM Kart-LeCont), the “home master” in Sarno, who secured the pole position in Session 2 with a time of 53.310s. However, a great time was also posted by the young Japanese driver Kean Nakamura-Berta (#96 Prema Racing/KR-Iame), who had the best performance in Session 3 with a time of 53.374s, while the other Italian driver Paolo Ippolito (#21 KR Motorsport/KR-Iame) was the fastest in Session 1 with a time of 53.514s.

Among the top contenders were also Nakamura’s teammate, the Jamaican driver Alex Powell, who achieved the second-best time in Session 2 with 53.455s, as well as the French driver Jeremy Iglesias (#81 CRG Racing Team/CRG-TM Kart) with the second-best time in Session 3 in 53.392s and the fellow Frenchman Adrien Renaudin (#94 DR/DR-Modena Engines) with the second-best time in Session 1 in 53.594s. Other standout performers of the weekend, showcasing their skills and achieving the third-best time in their respective heats, included the Italian driver Cristian Bertuca (#51 BirelART Racing/BirelART-TM Kart) with a time of 53.469s in Session 2, the Dutch driver Senna Van Walstijn (#1 Sodikart/Sodi-TM Kart) with a time of 53.496s set in Session 3, and his teammate from France Emilien Denner, with a time of 53.625s in Session 1. The championship leader, the Dutch driver Stan Pex (#13 SP Motorsport/KR-TM Kart), secured the fifth-best time in Session 1 (53.547s).

MINI Gr.3 – Baglin takes the pole position by 0.013s

The pole position of MINI Gr.3 was claimed by a whisker by the English driver Noah Baglin (#521 iKart/KR-Iame-Vega) with a time of 1:02.486s, which was just 0.013s ahead of the time posted by the American driver Devin Walz (#514 BabyRace/Parolin-Iame) and 0.088s of that of the Australian driver William Calleja, Walz’s teammate. The other top positions were secured by the championship leader, the Romanian driver Bogdan Cosma Cristofor (#539 Team Driver/KR-Iame), who achieved the fourth-best time, trailing by 0.159s and by Vladimir Ivannikov (#522 Gamoto/EKS-TM Kart) with the fifth-best time, trailing by 0.178s. Following closely behind were the Monégasque Andrea Manni (#625 BabyRace/Parolin-Iame) at 0.203s, the Spanish drivers Bosco Arias Chavarri (#503 Team Driver/KR-Iame) at 0.211s and Nicola Stanley (#523 Gamoto/EKS-TM Kart) at 0.219s, the Peruvian Mariano Lopez (#509 BabyRace/Parolin-Iame) at 0.260s and Panama’s Gianmatteo Rousseau (#504 Team Driver/KR-Iame) at 0.267s.

MINI Gr.3 Under 10 – A super time by Di Pietrantonio

Among the very young drivers of MINI Under 10, the Italian Lorenzo Di Pietrantonio (#559 Virus Racing/BirelART-Iame-Vega) set an impressive time to secure the pole position with a lap of 1:03.012s, holding a good advantage over his pursuers led by the Australian Sebastian Eskandari-Marandi (#524 Tony Kart R.T./Tony Kart-Vortex) who ended 0.213s behind and the Belgian driver Antoine Venant (#572 Kidix/KR-Iame) at 0.241s. The young karting driver, Oleksandr Bondarev, who suffered multiple fractures, is back on the racetrack showing his best and winning again.

Bondarev stalls in the middle of the track. Seven drivers manage to avoid him but he is finally rammed by Sankka Dahlstrom, who couldn’t avoid him. Both drivers are medically treated. The race stops, Oleksandr’s life stops.

That 2nd May was the beginning of an unqualifiable story of overcoming the odds. It was unthinkable that after 10 operations and two months in hospital, Bondarev would so soon return to the asphalt and be as successful as he had been before the accident.

A year later, Oleksandr entered the FIA karting competition organised for the first time at the Steel Ring circuit in Trinec (Czech Republic).

The Czech organisers spared no effort to welcome the participants, attendees and officials of the second round of the FIA European Karting Championship – OK & Junior and the first round of the FIA Karting Academy Trophy, in the presence of FIA Karting President Akbar Ebrahim and Vice-President John Ryan.

The 1223-metre Steel Ring track, with its winding and hilly layout, offered challenges to the drivers and technicians, especially amidst changing conditions.

Oleksandr Bondarev (UKR-KR/IAME/Vega) proved unbeatable in the Junior category. Considered the favourite at the start of the final, he lived up to his status by leading from start to finish despite Lewis Wherrell’s challenge in the closing laps. Less than two tenths separated them at the finish line. Zac Drummond took third place ahead of Thibaut Ramaekers. Dries van Langendonck completed the top five ahead of an up-and-coming rider, Jack Iliffe.

Kit Belosky also moved up 10 places to finish 11th ahead of Andy Consani, who moved up 13 places.

Ramaekers and Bondarev moved up seven places in the FIA International Karting Ranking (IKR) to second and third respectively in all categories. Bondarev retained his top position in OK-Junior, while Wherrell moved up three places to second.

All in all, Oleksandr Bondarev’s story of achievement should serve as an example, not only to athletes, but to anyone. The challenge was enormous, but he has never lost the will to keep fighting to recover. After two intense months of hard work, he managed not only to return to competition in record time, but also to return to the top of the podium. Now, there is no doubt that he will continue to fight for his dreams on the track, competing again and enjoying karting.

After the successful start of the Mini 60 Series in Muelsen, promoter Chrono Karting is expanding its program in the German Kart Championship. The young talents will now also be represented by the half-time race at Wackersdorf and the finale at Franciacorta (Italy). Registration is now open at www.chrono.nl

Chrono Karting is bringing the Mini 60 into the supporting program of Germany’s top kart racing series this season. At the premiere in Muelsen 18 young racers were on the grid and also for Genk (Belgium) a great field has already formed. After the Mini 60 was scheduled from the start at the races in Muelsen, Genk (Belgium) and Kerpen, the drivers can look forward to two more events.

Chrono Karting is now also announcing the Mini 60 Series at the mid-season event from August 25-27 in Wackersdorf and the finale at the end of October (Oct. 27-29) in Franciacorta (Italy). “For our sport it’s important to develop young karting talents, we are pleased that Chrono Karting has taken on this task and has chosen the environment of the DKM for this,” praises DKM series coordinator Stefan Wagner the commitment.

The races will be held in accordance with the international CIK karting regulations, which means that the series also offers a perfect basis for international drivers. Youngsters from the age of 10 are eligible to start, and the age-group rule applies (2010-2013). A national karting license with permission to start abroad is required. The starting field will be limited to 36 participants per event.

The race program of the Mini 60 is corresponding to the DKM classes. The practice sessions will take place on Friday, followed by another practice session, qualifying and the heats on Saturday. Sunday consists of a warm-up, pre-final and final race. The top five of the final will be honored with trophies. The Mini 60 will also start with Vega tyres, the emission-free e-fuel from P1 Fuels and carburetors from Dell´Orto.

Full details and online entry can be found on promoter Chrono Karting’s website www.chrono.nl in the Mini 60 Series section. Each event is a single event, the entry fee per event is 400€ incl. VAT. Online entry can also be done as block entry for the remaining four races this season.

A long winter break comes to an end next weekend for the German Kart Championship. In Muelsen, the three categories DJKM (OKJ), DSKM (KZ2) and DSKC (KZ2) will start into the new season. In the supporting program, the young drivers of the Mini 60 Series by Chrono Karting will compete

Last year, the DKM ended with an exciting finale at Prokart Raceland Wackersdorf. Since then, the organization have been working on an attractive program for 2023. “We have had busy months and have put a lot of energy into the new season. The good numbers of participants in both DSKM and DSKC shifter kart classes are confirmation of this; with 60 drivers there, we are exceeding the already good figures from 2022. In contrast, there is still a negative development in the OK categories,” explains DKM series coordinator Stefan Wagner.

The Arena E in Muelsen is one of the fastest race tracks on this year’s racing calendar. This is the third time that the circuit has been included in the DKM program and it has always offered exciting races so far. In the DSKM, several champions will again be taking to the track, including Jorrit Pex (SP Motorsport). The Dutchman won his eighth title last year and has an unassailable lead in the rankings. But the competition is once again strong with 28 entrants.

The cards will be reshuffled in the DSKC: 32 drivers will be on the grid and, as in previous years, the top five from last season will not be eligible to start. This means that there will again be a new balance of power. One of the favorites is the reigning DKM champion Maxim Rehm (Rehm Racing) – the rookie moves up to the shifter karts this year and already convinced with strong results in the last weeks at other international events.

Young racers will also be promoted again. In addition to the German Junior Kart Championship, the youngest drivers from the Mini 60 class will be represented for the first time this year. The Dutch promoter Chrono Karting announces the Mini 60 Series within the framework of the DKM and is pleased to welcome 19 participants at the start. In addition to the event in Muelsen, the Minis will also be competing in Genk and Kerpen.

Live timing, live stream and social media accompany the DKM

In 2012, the DKM was the first race series worldwide to start with a live stream and, eleven years later, is once again presenting extensive coverage. Starting with qualifying on Saturday, all events will be live-streamed at www.kart-dm.de. At the same time, the social media presence will be expanded this year. To this end, there will be live timing as early as midday on Friday – also at www.kart-dm.de.

Late deciders can still register after the start of the season

Drivers who enter the season opener in Muelsen as a guest driver can still decide to enter a full season after the race weekend. In case of a later registration in one of the four categories, the entry fee from Muelsen will be offset against the registration fee. Participants will also be credited with the points from the first round after the event.

On Saturday, qualifying will start at 11:40 am. After the lunch break, the heats will take place, which will determine the starting grid for the finals on Sunday. Here the starting signal is given at 09:40 with the DJKM.

DKM race calendar 2023:

Max Mayer, karting driver, currently also competing in the Ligier European Series, is in a great moment of form

Max Mayer has told us how he lived last season and what he expects from this year, where as well as competing in karting, he will also compete in the Ligier European Series.

Looking to the future, one of his main objectives is to be able to compete in the World Endurance Championship.

QUESTION: WHO IS MAX MAYER?

Max Mayer: I am quite an aggressive driver, but I also have a lot of mental capacity. I have worked hard to achieve things and to reach my goal, which is to compete in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and to be a professional driver for a Hypercar team.

Q: WHO INTRODUCED YOU TO THIS WORLD?

MM: I started with my father when I was four years old. I drove my first kart when I was five years old, a TopKart. I remember when I saw it for the first time, I was very impressed. Then when I was seven years old I started racing in national races, and from there I progressed, competing in Europeans, doing world championships in karting, and now I am where I am thanks to that, and to Kokoro, which is a driver programme that has helped me to go from karting to cars.

Q: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THIS WORLD?

MM: My start in karting was a lot of fun. I remember doing the regionals and the nationals, where I won the Valencian Championship three times in a row. From then on I competed in bigger championships. In my first year of mini I was third, and in junior we started very well, but it was a bit difficult. I am very happy with my karting career.

Q: HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE THE PANDEMIC?

MM: The pandemic was when I joined Kokoro. In that programme I also work a lot with the simulator, which helps me to prepare much better for each race, and we can also practice different techniques. We didn’t touch the kart for about six months, which made us lose a lot of control over the kart.

Q: IS IT COMPLICATED TO COMPETE IN DIFFERENT COMPETITIONS DURING THE SAME YEAR?

MM: I don’t think so, because in karting we always compete with the same drivers. It is more complicated when you move up from X30 to OK, which is an engine that has no clutch. Also, you are with factory teams and other drivers, but it’s easy to adapt.

Q: DO YOU THINK A LOT ABOUT THE RACES BEFORE YOU GO RACING?

MM: I wouldn’t say no, because if you do you put a lot of pressure on yourself and get nervous. I don’t think about that. I used to eat my head a bit, but now I just flow without thinking.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH ALL YOUR RIVALS?

MM: I have a lot of friends in karting, but that’s off the track. When you are racing, it’s a different world. When you are inside the kart, the attitude changes, but I have never had a problem with that.

Q: WHO IS YOUR RIVAL ON THE TRACK?

MM: I want to beat them all. When I do my best, but it’s not enough, it makes me a bit angry. I’m always there to try to beat them.

Q: DO YOU HAVE A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR TEAM?

MM: I have been with my karting team, Marlon Kart, for 11 years in total. They have always been like a family to me, they have always supported me. It’s a very close relationship.

Q: WHAT IS IT LIKE TO HAVE COMPETED IN KARTING FOR SO MANY YEARS?

MM: There comes a point when you get a bit bored with the automatics. If you compete for so many years in the same discipline you can get a bit overwhelmed. On the other hand, if you move on to KZ, which is what I’ve done, it’s a different world. It’s the most fun there is in karting.

Q: HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO COMPETE IN THE LIGIER EUROPEAN SERIES?

MM: It is very interesting. I see myself doing well in the championship, the main goal is to win it. I think we can do very well, although they are all very fast drivers.

Q: HOW DOES IT FEEL TO COMPETE IN THE FORMULA 4 SPANISH CHAMPIONSHIP?

MM: I won a scholarship for Formula 4 thanks to Formula Campeones. I am very happy, I am very happy. It has been an incredible year, where I have learned a lot of things. It has also been difficult, as our team is smaller, we don’t have as many drivers as Campos Racing for example. It was a positive year, even if we were not where we wanted to be.

Q: HOW DO YOU RATE YOUR START OF THE SEASON?

MM: I have looked very good in pre-season testing and I am ready for the first race in Barcelona. It won’t be easy, we will see our real performance on Friday.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR RACE TIME ROUTINE?

MM: I am in a motorsport training centre where we are eight drivers from all over Spain. We train for two hours in the morning, then we have lessons and in the afternoon we do two hours in the kart, although we also have a gym so we can prepare ourselves well.

Q: HOW WOULD YOU RATE YOUR PREVIOUS SEASON?

MM: It was difficult because we didn’t have the same telemetry as the others. However, I am happy, as I have been able to improve my mental capacity. If something doesn’t work, I can adapt very well, and if something doesn’t work, I can fix it.

Q: HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR FUTURE? WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?

MM: Being in the Ligier European Series, my goal is to make it to the WEC. I see myself very well for the next few years, where I can be in a very competitive world. Since I was a kid I have always wanted to race in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona….

The FIA Karting season continues in Spain as the first round of the FIA Karting European Championship – KZ & KZ2 is set to take place from 14th to 16th April 2023 at the Circuito Internacional Zuera near Zaragoza in central Spain. 123 names are on the entry list representing 24 nations, most of them European.

The Circuito Internacional Zuera is the longest of the season at 1,699m in the wide open spaces of the Aragon desert. Known for its speed, the Spanish track is also very technical. The width of the track increases the possibility of overtaking and the slipstream phenomenon is not to be neglected. All these attributes have been appreciated by the vast majority of international drivers since 2007. The last time KZ came here was in 2016 during a CIK-FIA European event. Finally, the climate in Zuera can produce strong winds and sudden weather changes with a tendency for storms.

Both categories in Zuera will be equipped with LeCont ‘Prime’ tyres and 100% sustainable P1 Fuel will be used exclusively.

KZ: the pinnacle of kart racing.

The FIA Karting European Championship – KZ will once again feature an interesting field in terms of quantity and quality. With Davide Foré (ITA), Lorenzo Travisanutto (ITA), Jérémy Iglesias (FRA), Pedro Hiltbrand (ESP), Jorrit Pex (NLD) and Viktor Gustafsson (SWE), six former World Champions will be at the start in Zuera. Very fast in OK, the Czech Tereza Babickova will try her luck in the starring category, as will the Italian Luigi Coluccio. But the bulk of the 31 drivers is made up of gearbox specialists who have done their apprenticeship in KZ2. There is no shortage of talent to aim to succeed the Italian Paolo Ippolito, including the Italians Riccardo Longhi, Danilo Albanese, Matteo Vigano, Giuseppe Palomba, Lorenzo Camplese, the Frenchmen Adrien Renaudin, Émilien Denner, Tom Leuillet and Arthur Carbonnel, without forgetting the Dutchmen Stan Pex and Senna van Walstijn or the German David Trefilov.

It should be noted that the rules have changed this year with regard to the Qualifying Heats if the number of participants is less than or equal to 36. The starting order of the second heat will be the order of the first heat’s ranking and that of the third heat, the order of the second heat’s ranking.

KZ2: no shortage of title contenders.

With its 92 entries, the FIA Karting European Championship – KZ2 retains its broad base of drivers who have been present in the category for several seasons, but the new generation is making its presence felt with the entry of young talents such as Freddie Slater (GBR), and drivers who alternate with the OK category such as Alex Powell (JAM), Kean Nakamura-Berta (GBR), Tomass Stolcermanis (LVA), Maksim Orlov as well as the 2023 OK World Champion Matheus Morgatto (BRA). Italy is represented by top seeds like Cristian Bertuca, current KZ2 number one in the International Karting Ranking (IKR), Alessio Piccini, Alex Marigliano, Matteo Zanchi. Romanian Daniel Vasile, Spanish Jorge Pescador, Finn Paavo Tonteri, Estonian Markus Kajak, Dutch Kris Haanen, German Robert Kindervater, Ukrainian Viacheslav Putiatin, and Frenchman Matteo Spirgel are among the drivers to follow during a very open competition.

The FIA Karting European Championships – OK and Junior have just started in Spain at the Kartódromo Internacional Lucas Guerrero in Valencia with 169 participants. Italian-licensed Brazilian Gabriel Gomez took pole position in Qualifying from the 86 OK drivers and the young German Taym Saleh was the fastest of the 83 OK-Junior drivers.

The first event of the FIA Karting season, the first of the four events of the OK and Junior European Championships takes place from 24th to 26th March in Valencia on the Mediterranean coast. The number of drivers present confirms a high and well-balanced entry which bodes well for the future. Qualifying Practice was held on Friday in the middle of the day under a light cloudy sky. The wind remained moderate and the temperature rose to above 20°. The conditions were therefore ideal.

The sessions were alternated between OK-Junior with Vega tyres and OK with MG tyres. The time difference between the categories was just over a second per lap, with the OKs in the lead. The drivers usually waited until the second half of their Qualifying session to go for a time, with their best performances coming between the second and third laps. The gaps between the contenders proved to be small.

Taym Saleh the Junior Poleman

It was the first time that Taym Saleh (DEU) achieved a pole position in the FIA Karting European Championship – Junior in his third year in the category. Running in the top 10 of Free Practice on Friday morning, Taym Saleh put in a superb performance in Session 3 to improve on his second lap with 55”343. His main rival in this series was Zac Drummond (GBR) at 0.026”, followed by Iacopo Martinese in 3rd by 0.064”. The first session was led by Niklas Schaufler (AUT) on 55’413, followed at 0.028” by Oleksandr Bondarev (UKR) and Christian Costoya (ESP) by 0.980”. Elliot Kaczynski (SWE) was the fastest in Session 2 in 55”385 with Thibaut Ramaekers (BEL) following by 4 hundredths, while Salin Hanna (COL) finished 3rd by 1.5 tenths.

In the overall ranking, Saleh was ahead of Kaczynski and Schaufler, followed by Drummond and Ramaekers in the top five, with Bondarev, Martinese, Hanna, Costoya and Bottaro completing a top 10 occupied by nine different countries. The top seven were separated by less than a tenth of a second.

OK: Gomez back on pole

Racing here under Italian licence, Gabriel Gomez had already made a name for himself by taking pole position at the 2021 FIA Karting World Championship – OK in Spain at Campillos. This year, the Brazilian shone at the beginning of the season at the opening of the European OK Championship by taking another Spanish pole position during the second Qualifying session with a time of 54”023. Alex Powell (JAM) and Arthur Poulain (FRA) followed him by more than a tenth. Luviwe Sambdula (ZAF) had previously set an initial reference time of 54”191 in Session 1, just a thousandth ahead of Kean Nakamura-Berta (GBR), then David Walther in 3rd a few hundredths further back. In Session 3, the 2022 Junior World Champion Enzo Tarnvanichkul (THA) came within 4 hundredths of pole position with Jan Przyrowski (POL) and Rene Lammers (NLD) grouped together by 0.080”.

Gomez, Tarnvanichkul and Sambudla formed the leading group against Powell and Przyrowski, while Nakamura-Berta, Poulain, Lammers, Walther and Turney completed the top 10.

The drivers and teams in the OK and OK-Junior categories travelled to Spain and the Lucas Guerrero circuit in Valencia with great enthusiasm and motivation to compete in the first of five events of the Champions of the Future Euro Series.

The promoter RGMMC has introduced a number of improvements, for example in race control to make the races fairer, live streaming with better quality broadcasting and the regulations with the adoption of recent decisions taken by the FIA Karting. From 10th to 12th March, in beautiful sunshine and high temperatures for the season, the races put on a magnificent show and saw Thibaut Ramaekers in OK-Junior and Joe Turney in OK mount the top step of the podium.

Two weeks before the start of the FIA Karting European Championships in the OK and OK-Junior categories, the drivers were able to prepare themselves in the best possible conditions for this long-awaited event, while taking part in one of the most competitive international championships of the season. The field was strong, with a total of 161 drivers: 85 in OK-Junior and 76 in OK. It should be remembered that the Champions of the Future Euro Series adopts the same tyres (Vega and MG) and the same regulations as in FIA Karting. Therefore, the event has introduced a new scale. Drivers now score points in descending order: 50, 44, 41, 38, 36… in the heats and 75, 69, 63, 57, 51, 48… in the Super Heats.

In Spain, the competitors were able to take advantage of optimal weather conditions, with lots of sunshine and temperatures sometimes rising to 28°! After the pole positions achieved by Frenchman Jimmy Helias in OK and Belgian Thibaut Ramaekers in OK-Junior, no less than 16 different drivers managed to win heats: Helias of course in OK, as well as Polish driver Jan Przyrowski, Jamaican driver Alex Powell, Latvian driver Tomass Stolcermanis, Italian driver Nicolo Cuman, British driver Joe Turney, Italian driver Sebastiano Pavan, Japanese driver Kean Nakamura-Berta and Luxembourg’s Guillaume Bouzar.

There was also a lot going on in the OK-Junior category with the success in the heats of Stepan Antonov, the Colombian Salim Hanna Hernandez, the Italian Filippo Sala, the Swede Elliot Kaczynski, Kirill Dzitiev and the Ukrainian Oleksandr Bondarev, without forgetting Ramaekers who won all five heats. The Super Heats went to Britain’s Lewis Wherrell and Stepan Antonov.

OK-Junior: First victory in the category for Ramaekers

After several races in Italy, it was interesting to see the young drivers compete on a circuit that is unknown to most of them. Several of them were aiming for victory, as the start showed, with Thibaut Ramaekers (VDK Racing) narrowly holding the lead over Stepan Antonov (KR Motorsport). Lewis Wherrell (Forza Racing) immediately followed in their wake. A problem on the warm-up lap forced the unfortunate Swede Elliot Kaczynski (Ward Racing) to retire, while a collision involved several drivers in the field. Intense duels between Austrian Niklas Schaufler (DPKRacing), Kirill Dzitiev (Tony Kart Racing Team), Italian Filippo Sala (Sodikart) and Scotland’s Zac Drummond (Parolin Motorsport) enlivened the chasing pack.

In the end, the positions in the leading trio did not change. Ramaekers took a magnificent victory ahead of Antonov and Wherrell. Schaufler barely kept the advantage on Dzitiev for 4th place, the latter setting the fastest lap in the race. Sala was 6th ahead of Drummond, American Jack Iliffe (Parolin Motorsport), Switzerland’s Kian Fardin (KR Motorsport) and Belgian Dries Van Langendonck (Energy Corse). Noah Monteiro (KR Motorsport) made a good comeback from 23rd to 11th place.

OK: Joe Turney’s fantastic drive

Joe Turney (KR Motorsport), who finished 32nd in the time trials, was not one of the main favourites on Friday. But in the heats, he found a good top speed and started his comeback, to the point of coming back to 7th on the grid in the Final. Jan Przyrowski (Tony Kart Racing Team) and Kean Nakamura-Berta (Prema Racing), winners of their Super Heat, were on the front row of the Final, but did not keep their position for long. Alex Powell (Prema Racing) quickly took the lead, followed like a shadow by the Frenchman Arthur Poulain (Tony Kart Racing Team), while a racing incident occurred at the chicane. Overtaken by Turney, the Dane David Walther (Koski Motorsport) tried to defend his place against Nakamura-Berta, but the two drivers clashed and ended their race in the safety barriers.

Turney continued to push forward, passing Przyrowski and then Poulain, before tackling Powell. The British driver found the opening on the 15th lap of the 22-lap race and went on to win in style. Powell took the second step of the podium ahead of Poulain, who controlled the excellent comeback of Thai driver Enzo Tarnvanichkul (Prema Racing), who set the fastest lap in the race. Przyrowski had to be satisfied with 5th place. Further back, the Briton Nathan Tye (Sodikart) and the Italian Luigi Coluccio (Tony Kart Racing Team) improved by seven places and 14 places respectively. The top ten was completed by Latvian Tomass Stolcermanis (Energy Corse), Dutchman Rene Lammers (Parolin Motorsport) and Frenchman Jules Caranta (Energy Corse). There was disappointment for Frenchman Jimmy Helias (Ward Racing), who started in 4th position.

RGMMC introduces new solutions.

During the winter, promoter James Geidel invested in a new infrastructure to further improve the standing of his top international organisations. In addition to the usual space reserved for the reception of competitors, RGMMC has acquired a brand new structure where race control will be installed with a system of image replay, which allows the stewards to examine each incident very quickly, and four work spaces for the judges of fact. More than 40 high-speed, high-definition dome cameras can be installed on the circuit.

On the TV broadcast side, the series promoter continues to move forward with high quality audio solutions and a highly customisable video distribution system with large arrays that offer greater flexibility to broadcast at a high level. This obviously greatly improves live streaming.

Of course, these new features will also be introduced at the 2023 FIA Karting events.
